One of the fastest growing recreational groups in Brunswick County is the Grands Strand Running Club that reaches from Georgetown SC to Ocean Isle Beach NC and beyond. From it’s humble beginnings in the 1980’s, the Grand Strand Running Club has grown into a beloved pillar of the community — supporting walkers and runners of all levels with over a 400 person membership. There are multiple group run meet ups with the most recent addition to the club being that in Sunset Beach on Monday nights at 6:00pm This group meets in the Sea Trail Convention Center parking lot and offers distance options ranging from 2 to 5 miles and currently has a wide range of abilities attending. There are those that are just beginning their walking journey and this is their first group experience and there are also those that have a lot of running experience but what everyone agrees on is that EVERYONE feels welcome and encouraged.

We’ve been reaching new record attendance on a weekly basis and this past week despite the heat we had nearly 50 in attendance. We start each week with a round of introductions and then make sure everyone knows where they are going and if it’s anyones first time they are paired with someone of similar abilities. Those who finish their walk or run first stay and wait for others and we make sure everyone has come in before dispersing for the evening. No one cares how slow or fast anyone is because this is a super social group and everyone loves hanging around to cheer in others. We’ve recently added a monthly Saturday morning option and are calling it “miles and muffins”. Basically we meet 1 Saturday morning a month at different locations and have breakfast after we run. Our next Saturday morning meet up will be July 19th and anyone interested in joining can find the details on the Coastal Race Productions Facebook page.

What Members Are Saying:

One of our regular attenders Dawn Mill and Owner of Pelican’s Book Store said, “I love the sense of community at every group meet up or race. Everyone encourages each other, and it is such a judgement free zone! No matter your age or speed, you are made to feel like you are part of this walking and running “family”!

Paul Dunwell, the Shallotte Fire Chief said, “From day one, I was welcomed, supported and encouraged. Strangers quickly became friends, and the community embraced not just me, but my entire family.
