Walking and Running:  Women of Brunswick County

Registration is officially open for She Moves NC, a self-paced walking and/or running program exclusively for women. Over the last 3 years, more than 400 women, ranging in age from 16 to 87, have participated in this local program with the intent to better their health and mindset and we are excited to continue to grow that number across our communities. This falls workshop is set to begin September 16th and we sincerely hope that you, or the woman in your life, will be joining us.

What is She Moves? We’re glad you asked! It’s a 10 Week program for women of differing abilities with the shared goal of bettering yourself through movement. It is both a gradual build and self paced program so there is absolutely no experience required, however, the program is also designed to help someone with a little more experience to also improve. Registration includes 10 weekly clinics with focus topics, weekly group workouts, homework assignments, social media support, mentor and coaching support, loads of encouragement, new friendships and your goal event registration into the Calabash Turkey Trot. There is both a 5K and 10K option and for more information, location, times and to register please visit SheMovesNC.com.

There’s something magical about a women’s only fitness program, it fosters a sense of camaraderie, empowerment and mutual support that can be hard to find. It also removes any uneasiness creating a comfortable environment to start something new or improve. The average age of our attendees have been in their early 60’s and since they were in school prior to title nine, often times were not encouraged to participate in school athletics. Ladies, now is the time!Another reason to join a program such as She Moves is that it is so hard to achieve our health and fitness goals going it alone. It’s not for lack of wanting to, we all want to be healthier, but often times we lack a plan or the follow through to make it happen. She Moves will provide the kind of accountability that helps you keep going even when your initial motivation wears thin.

Why is walking and/or running a good choice for women? Regular, moderate walking/running can reduce the risk of osteoporosis, breast cancer and diabetes. Walking or running can cut the risk of a heart attack in half for women. It is the most accessible aerobic sport and relatively inexpensive. Everyone is capable of walking or running and information on training is widely available. It is a great method of stress reduction and weight management. Walking and running makes you feel good, it improves self esteem, empowerment and confidence especially for women. It also puts you in good company with other women who share like minded goals.

I know first hand how walking and running have changed my life and my main goal is to ensure every woman in Brunswick County, a community I’ve grown to love and call home, has the same opportunity to embark on their own health and wellness journey. Ladies, make time to become a healthier and happier YOU – your future self will thank you. Keep moving forward!
