Walking and Running does wonders for our bodies by strengthening our bones and muscles, exercising our lungs and boosting the immune system. Living an active lifestyle also makes us more alert, which means kids who are active also tend to be active learners. It also helps boost our brains ability to slow cognitive decline that begins after age 45. It’s a two-in-one work out that is perfect for the entire family.
Walking and Running is a multi-generational sport that everyone can feel a part of. Each family member going the appropriate speed or distance for themselves but training for and accomplishing a goal together. Both training for and running a race teaches hard work and dedication. By the time you and your children or grandchildren finish a race, you will have taught them discipline and perseverance and those are qualities they will take well beyond the finish line. Encouraging your family to move more and set a goal together will strengthen your family bond and create both a healthy and positive environment.
A great way to get younger children started is by playing games like Tag or Red Light, Green Light. If training with an adolescent consider a walk/run interval, it’s a great way to start. Be sure to let them set the pace and distance. Never critique about form or breathing – all of that will take care of itself as they improve. Keeping it fun and positive is what is most important.
All Coastal Race Production events offer something for the entire family starting with a 1 Mile Fun Run, 5K, 10K and even further distances. Family’s coming together, encouraging one another and celebrating the finish is one of the things I truly love about race weekend. Participating in an organized event also allows you to meet new like minded people, so you’re bound to meet families like yours who love to be active and spend quality time together. Perhaps, your family doesn’t live in the general area, but registering everyone for a race where you live and training together from a distance could be a really fun way to connect and might encourage your family to make an extra trip to visit you here in Brunswick county for the race. What a special finish line celebration that would be to have your family in town for the event, cheering one another across the finish line!
Embracing running or walking as a family activity is more than just a way to stay physically active; it’s a journey filled with laughter, challenges, unforgettable moments and family memories. In the grand scheme of things, the distances run or the times achieved are secondary to the shared experiences and the values instilled through running together. You never know, the finish line might just be the beginning!
